My First Year Teaching
After visiting some extended family members in Georgia, I decided that I liked it there, and I would try my hand at finding a teaching job. I went to a few schools and dropped off my resume, and a week later I was a proud employee of Hall County Schools. The name of my school was Chestnut Mountain Elementary and it was in Flowery Branch, Georgia. The idea of me teaching the fifth grade was a little frightening to me. I had loved second graders and how little they were. I was not sure I was ready for such big kids. To my surprise, I loved it! I have a good sense of humor and it came in handy quite a bit with the older kids. I just loved how they responded to my jokes and sarcasm. We had a lot of fun together, but we also worked really hard. We became pen-pals with a good friend of mine's class in Michigan. We also worked really hard on our door decorating contest. It was reading month and all my kids read a 'Great Illustrated Classic'. The books were classic chapter books with a few illustrations throughout. Once we all read a book we illustrated our own pics that opened up to a book summary. Our principal picked us as the winner because we not only decorated, we read and summarized! We had a great year, but I was too far from home. I missed my family and left in search for a job in Michigan again.
